Recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month

As Hispanic Heritage Month enters into its final days, we reflect on the contributions to this continent and NYC.

Whether you prefer Latinx, Hispanic, Latino, or indigenous; whether you make by with “Spanglish” or you’re Japanese-Cuban, Italian-Puerto Rican, or an immigrant artist from Ecuador— we see you!

We also see that 1 in 5 in NY’s energy sector are Hispanic/Latino and it has been our Day One mission to improve on that. Our organization applauds the work of the NY State Puerto Rican & Hispanic Task Force, chaired by Assemblywoman Maritza Davila (D-53) and NYSERDA willing to invest in training.

There’s much to be done, but we honor our elders & ancestors while acknowledging Colonialism, Colorism, and Eurocentrism require stark & honest address. We follow in the footsteps of environmental justice leaders like @elpuentepresente , community builders like @lossures and @lulacny55 , icons like @therealjoebataan and neighborhood fixtures such as @marioeserrano42 @tonitasny @doriartin427 and so many others.

Finally, thanks to young leaders like @samyforbrooklyn we helped @nyc_2020census reduce that undercount. Efforts to #makebrooklyncount help underscore the demographics shift in our country. Today, 1 in 4 in the US identify as “of Hispanic or Latin descent.” By 2060, it will be 1 in 3.
